Hannah Williams (she/her) is a Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Performance Psychology and has a strong background supporting individuals navigating Alzheimer’s, dementia, depression, and trauma. Hannah has specialized training in grief work and is also pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Addictions Counseling to broaden her clinical skills.

Her approach is grounded in Existential and Person-Centered therapies, focusing on holistic well-being and honoring each client’s unique story.

The Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) provide a framework that guides counselors in integrating multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice principles into their practice. For me, the MSJCC is not only about applying these principles with participants, but also about deepening my own self-awareness as a counselor. Understanding my own cultural identity, values, and potential biases allows me to more effectively recognize and honor the worldview, cultural background, and lived experiences of the participants I work with.

By actively seeking to understand each participant’s worldview, I can create a therapeutic relationship that is culturally responsive and rooted in respect and authenticity. This awareness strengthens the counseling alliance, fosters trust, and helps participants feel seen and validated in their unique identities. Beyond the counseling room, the MSJCC also emphasizes the counselor’s role as an advocate. Embracing this responsibility, I am committed to supporting participants not only through individual healing but also by working to challenge systemic barriers and promote equity whenever possible.
