Therapy Practitioner

Headshot 1_edited.jpg

Derek Reed Cho (he/him) holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. While he has experience in a university counseling center, working with undergraduate and graduate students, Derek also works with teens and adults across different stages of life, supporting a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, and life transitions.

He approaches therapy through a trauma-informed, culturally responsive lens that considers how identity, relationships, life experiences, and larger systems shape mental health. Derek draws from practice-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), embodiment practices, and practical skill-building, while prioritizing collaboration and a strong therapeutic relationship.

Derek enjoys working with participants navigating anxiety, depression, stress, identity development, major life transitions, and the impacts of trauma. He is committed to practicing in alignment with the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC), bringing cultural humility, intentionality, and ongoing self-reflection to his work.

MSJCC means approaching my work with humility, accountability, and a deep respect for each participant's lived experience. It requires ongoing awareness of how identity, power, and systemic factors shape not only participants' experiences of distress but also their access to care, sense of safety, and engagement in the healing process. Practicing in alignment with MSJCC means actively examining my own assumptions and privileges, remaining open to feedback, and being willing to adjust my approach when needed. It also means taking an affirming stance that recognizes participants within the broader social, cultural, and historical contexts that influence their lives. Ultimately, MSJCC guides me in creating a therapeutic space where participants feel seen, respected, and understood, and where treatment is responsive to their culture, values, and goals. I strive to maintain an ongoing commitment to learning, reflection, and advocacy in the service of ethical and effective care
